A is for Apple

Looking for something to do this Saturday?
Greetings from Vintage Virginia Apples!
The Shelton Family and Vintage Virginia Apples cordially invite you to our 10th Apple Harvest Festival on Saturday, November 6, held here at Rural Ridge Farm. We dedicate this day to celebrating the agricultural heritage of Southern Albemarle County and to sharing the world of vintage and heritage apples and fruit trees with our friends and neighbors.

Festival Details

The event runs from 10 AM to 5 PM and is free and open to the public.

We are looking forward to hosting our annual Apple Harvest Festival this Saturday, November 6th. We have a good supply of Winesaps, GoldRush. York Staymans, Virginia Gold and Albemarle Pippins, and smaller quantities of a number of other varieties. The Cove Garden Ruritans will be co-hosting the Festival again this year. They will be making Apple Butter from the classic Ida Red and Stayman apples this year. Also, they will be making Brunswick stew, sponsoring a bake sale, and conducting the hayrides. They will also offer games and prizes for the little ones.

Local musicians will be performing throughout the day, and various craftsmen and artisans will demonstrate and sell their wares.

Vintage Virginia Apples will be offering apples for tasting and for sale and will be pressing fresh cider to be sold by the cup or the gallon. Fresh unpasteurized cider is hard to find these days, and the number of varieties that cidermaker Chuck Shelton uses in our cider produces a wonderful beverage. The day promises to be crisp and hot mulled cider will be available

There will be tastings and workshops throughout the day on a variety of topics. There will be guided tours of Albemarle CiderWorks Cidery and the CiderWorks Tasting Room will be hosting tastings of our four fermented ciders.

The winner gets a $100 gift certificate from Vintage Virginia Apples and publication of the recipe in the online edition of In The Kitchen Magazine. Entries must be submitted by 11:30am the day of the Festival and judging will be done by a distinguished panel of tasters. All pies must be in disposable tins.
Please include the recipe and the variety of apples used.

The pies will then be sold by the slice for the benefit of the CoveGarden Ruritans’ charitable initiatives. The CoveGarden Ruritan Club will be co-hosting the event again this year.
