Meeting Recap - October 25, 2012

Today's meeting was one that we will be talking about for a long time...but before I get to that let's have some announcements!

  • Nancy Ryalls, our Childcare Director spoke to us about emergency drills at FBC; reminding us that if an emergency occurs to not automatically run to your child's room, but to vacate the building first for your own safety.  If you are needed to help get your baby or child out of the building you will be notified.
  • Many of you donated baby boy items to Jane's friend Michelle, and she (Michelle) would like to say thank you from her family!
  • If you have any donations for the family from Columbia (friends of Ivonne's) please bring them to a MOPS meeting.  They can use all kinds of household items; they also have a four year old son.
  • The MOPS trip to Greenfield Farm is this Saturday, Oct. 27th.  We will meet at the farm at 11am.  Be sure to tell the folks at the gate that you are with the MOPS group.  If there is questionable weather that day please call Greenfield 434-985-7653) to make sure they are open before you leave your house!  The address of the farm is 2455 Dairy Road in Ruckersville.
  • On Monday, October 29th MOPS will be trick-or-treating at The Laurels.  The Laurels is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in Charlottesville.  Each October MOPS takes a group there to "trick-or-treat" from the residents, who are delighted to see little ones in their costumes.  We will meet there on Monday at 3pm; the address is 1165 Pepsi Place in Charlottesville.  If you have any questions please contact Marianne Tolley.
  • The Women's Bible Study at Trinity Presbyterian is looking for someone willing to present their testimony on Wednesday, December 5th.  This would involve a five minute presentation of how you came to know Jesus Christ as your Savior and how he has changed your life.  If you are interested in this opportunity to share your faith please contact Mere Curs.

Now for our "Get to Know You" questions...
This person loves to dance and her favorite thing is a dance game for the Wii - it's Cynthia D.!
Who lived in Switzerland for seven years?  Krista!
Her favorite hobbies are flag football and mud races...Emily K.!

Congratulations to Sara D. who was able to bring baby Emery to her first MOPS meeting!  Welcome back!  And Happy Birthday wishes to Nancy Ryalls!  We hope you have a great birthday and are so grateful for you!

Our door prizes today were some lovely MOPS t-shirts.  Our winners were Jill A., Crystal M., and Erika T.!

A big welcome to Mary Lou, our new mentoring mom.  She will start out at the purple table so stop by and say hi!

Our special guest today, whom several of you already know, was Dr. Ed Wolanski, an OBGYN in the Charlottesville area.  Dr. Wolanski has been a physician for many years and has delivered over nine thousand babies!  Being an obstetrician takes up much of Dr. Wolanksi's time, but he manages to enjoy some fishing and running in his free time.

Today Dr. Wolanski shared with us some useful information about women's health, starting with what is normal, medically speaking, and then moving on to the abnormal and what we should look for.  There were many (oh so many) pictures; although the koala seemed to be the group favorite.  I'm sure Nancy Ryalls will never forget this birthday as she had the privilege of advancing Dr. Wolanski's power point presentation!

Dr. Wolanski told us how women misdiagnose vaginal infections 50% of the time.  That shocking statistic shows us how invaluable medical professionals can be for women's health.  He also talked about prescribing antidepressants during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and about how he and his patients weigh the risks and benefits of their use.  He also told us that age 40 is when we should start scheduling annual mammograms.

Finally he addressed some ways that women can maintain their overall good health:  1. Get regular exercise - aim for one hour per day five times per week. 2. Achieve/maintain a healthy body weight 3. No smoking, especially during pregnancy.

We truly appreciate Dr. Wolanski talking with us and educating us today!

Our next meeting is Thursday, November 15th.  Hope to see you then!
